Launch of an innovative book on Welsh Linguistics and Lexicography
A volume of writings on Welsh Linguistics and Lexicography written in Welsh will be launched at 飯排眻畦 by the on the 21st of January.
The volume includes seven papers written by Dr Bruce Griffiths from Bangor, Dr David Willis from Cambridge University, Dr Elena Parina from Russia, currently at Marburg University in Germany, Bob Morris Jones from Aberystwyth, Dr Gwen Awbery from Cardiff, Andrew Hawke from the Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru, Aberystwyth, and Robat Trefor from Bangor University.
This is the first volume of writings to discuss aspects of linguistics in Welsh to be published for many years, despite the subjects increasing importance due to the recent growth in status and use of the language. Dylan Phillips, the Coleg Cymraegs senior academic manager said: This volume helps fill part of the huge gap in the field, and is a great boost for students and scholars who are interested in Linguistic and Lexicographical Studies.
The papers were originally delivered as a series of Grammar Geeks lectures organised by the Language Technologies Unit, Canolfan Bedwyr, 飯排眻畦. Delyth Prys, head of the LTU and volume editor said: We had an incredible response to the lectures, with over a hundred students, staff and translators attending the sessions. They were broadcast over the video conferencing network to the other Coleg Cymraeg studios throughout Wales. There were then calls for the lectures to be published, and we took advantage of the new e-book technology to do this in a simple and freely accessible manner.
The guest speaker at the book launch will be Dafydd Glyn Jones, joint editor of the Welsh Academy Dictionary, and one who has campaigned tirelessly for years to establish the Coleg Cymraeg and strengthen Welsh scholarship within Higher Education in Wales.
The book is published on Y Porth, the Coleg Cymraegs e-learning platform. It may be freely downloaded as an e-book for Apple and Android apps (in EPUB format), for Kindles (in MOBI format), or as a PDF to be read on a computer screen. Go to the to download a copy.
